NEW PUBLICATION: ADVANTAGES AND CHALLENGES ASSOCIATED WITH IMPLEMENTING AN ECOSYSTEM SERVICES APPROACH TO ECOLOGICAL RISK ASSESSMENT FOR CHEMICALS

Share

The ecosystem services (ES) approach has the potential to bring greater ecological relevance to setting and assessing environmental protection goals compared to current European regulatory frameworks for chemicals (e.g. REACH, EC 1107/2009). Scientific experts from European regulatory authorities, the chemical industry and academia discussed and evaluated the challenges associated with implementing an ES approach to chemical ecological risk assessment (ERA). The ES approach is applicable to all chemical sectors, but applying it to general chemicals with widespread and dispersive uses leading to broad environmental exposure is challenging. Limitations in linking current ecotoxicity tests and indicators to ES endpoints require the development of new tools and modelling approaches. Environmental scenarios should be developed to frame the ERA. Clear advantages of using an ES approach in ERA were identified and all stakeholder groups supported its further development.
