New Presentation: Skin metabolism: Considerations in pathways-based approaches to risk assessment

Dermal absorption represents a major route of exposure for ingredients in many home and personal care products. Absorption and potential toxicity of ingredients must both be considered while assessing safety risks to the consumer. The potential transformation of chemicals in the skin adds an extra dimension and brings particular challenges in an area increasingly focussed on non-animal, human-relevant safety risk assessments, made up of a broad panel of in silico, in vitro and in vivo (clinical) approaches.

The place of metabolism in safety risk assessment approaches based on Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs) will be considered, and case studies of typical topically applied chemicals will be discussed to highlight the tools and approaches that may be considered.
